If the software hive is corrupt, it may be possible to rename the software
hive found in;
%windir%\system32\config\software
to software.old
then copy the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback
as
%windir%\system32\config\software

If that fails you can copy/ use the file
%windir%\repair\software
This file is an image of the hive at the time the OS was installed, so you'd
have to reinstall all software. This being the case you might just as well
blow it away and start a new install. (note: this would at least allow you
to start the OS to make any necessary backups prior to wiping the drive.)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the
RecoveryConsole quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

You'll want to read the rest of the page. You'll need to boot from a dos
disk and then run the utility.

A parallel install is a new instance of the operating system installed
preferably on another partition or in another directory (like \winnt2)

Hi,

I am new to this forum.

I work as an NT techie at a companie and today I had this same problem
on a server after it had run a automatic windows update.
As far as I can say it had upgraded a few security things for data
access.

I tried to follow your recomendation but I immediatly ran into
problems.

On my win2k server platform there were no
%windir%\repair\regback\

Could you please tell me why? I mean is there some software that don't
run that makes registry backups or something like that?

I have also checked on a few other servers after I managed to get the
server up and running using the
%windir%\system32\config\software.sav
and they don't have the regback directory either.

It would be really nice to know that there is a registry backup on
every server.

Hope you can help out.

Won't exist unless you created the backups before hand. You can backup your
reg and create the ERD by going to; Programs|Accessories|System
Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then if you check the box for "Also
backup....", then the reg will also be backed up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

Dave:

Thanks a billion for all of your helpful replies in many forums. The
helped me to recover a system that crashed one week ago. However, i
appears that something really elusive and nasty is happening and it'
affecting a lot of systems; numerous recent articles on this topic.
have been smitten by it again tonight. My system is an old Compa
Deskpro that has NO SCSI devices.

After I could boot the PC again, after a week of research, I had som
application installation problems to work out; then was rolling alon
nothing much, when I saw the auto update icon in the system tray.
Eventually there were a batch of security fixes downloaded and ready t
install.

I created an Emergency Repair Disk, then installed the updates. Whe
the system rebooted, it crashed again with the same symptoms.

My system has Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
This is getting to be very perturbing.

Same thing just happened to my laptop today. This is all way over m
head, but I'm trying to understand it. Any advice would b
appreciated. THis is what I tried so far:
1. I f8'd and tried to boot in safe mode. Nope. 2. I made an ERD of
of my other PC running the same OS. No Help. Then I added the NTDTL
and NTDETECT files to the same disk and tried to boot with that fro
the FDD. No help. 3. Then I added the SOFTWARE.SAV file as well an
that didn't work because I think it went back to booting from the Har
disk because of an "invalid BOOT.INI file" message, so I don't think i
ever saw the SOFTWARD.SAV file on the floppy, (whatever that is). 4.
checked to see if I had a Recovery Console installed and I do not. An
I don't have the MS2000 install disks or CD to do a new install. Bu
even if I did, cannot afford a wipe of my HDD right now! I'll loos
months of work that I simply can't ever recover). (Yes, I'm guilty o
the cardinal sin).

I saw the info on renaming the SOFTWARE file to SOFTWARE.OLD, etc. Th
problem is, I cannot even get the thing to boot at all as describe
above to make any such attempts. Can you please advise?
